Meet MeetMate – My new App
I’m sure I’m not the only UX designer who has ever dreamed of creating their own app. As a species we are naturals at identifying problems with processes, tasks and user journeys in every day life.
However, there is very little (human readable) guidance on how to actually go about doing this, particularly once you get past the initial idea and UX.
After years of thinking about it I thought i’d finally take the dive and go about tackling one of the most inefficient human inventions – meetings.
Flimsy or non-existent agendas, lack of time-boxing and unclear objectives all often go together for a painful and unproductive experience for all involved. Something an iPhone app could help with I thought.
So say hello to MeetMate. It took around 4 months of branding, user testing, prototyping and development to get from start to finish and it was a LOT harder than I thought it would be.
Having to act as not only a UX designer, but a product owner and project manager came with a lot of internal conflict. This is better for the user, but will cost more and take longer – we’ve all had those discussions in our projects. But normally we don’t have to argue with ourselves about it.
As a result getting it down to a minimum viable product was very challenging and forced me to trim the product back to what I thought the bare essentials were:
- Setting a defined time for a meeting
- Setting objectives
- Creating an agenda quickly
- Keeping the meeting running on time
For now the app focuses on helping the facilitator / meeting organiser to keep things focussed and never overrun.
There are tons of new features in the back of my mind for improvements already. But as with any MVP the best thing to do is normally to throw it out there and see how people use it.
And that’s where you come in dear readers. I would love your feedback on the app (or @MeetMateApp) – good or bad. Any bugs will be greatly received. Tell me what’s missing, what you want more of and what simply doesn’t need to be there.
The app is compatible with iPhone 5/5C/5S, iPhone 6/6+ and iOS7 and iOS8.
In return I have posted a How I built an app series documenting the build process from start to finish in the hope it can help others like me who want to build their own app.
I have written about everything from working with designers, outsourcing the development and dealing with the surprisingly confusing hoops Apple makes you jump through to get the thing up and running.
MeetMate – Get a reputation for great meetings.
